Being a writer is a 99% guarantee that you’ll have quirky friends. I have quite a bit of fun with Deigan Marie, who loves cats, speaking in a British accent, and writing on her blog, and today she shares about her experience living a creative life.
What is/are your main creative disciplines and how do you pursue them?
My main creative discipline is writing. I pursue it by purposely setting aside time to create and immerse myself in whatever world I’m working on. I also carve out slots during my week to do something that enhances my creative process like watercolor or creating aesthetic boards.
How do you balance being creative with the rest of your life?
I’ve found that writing and life is not a balance, but rather a list of priorities. In some seasons, writing is a bigger priority than, say, reading or editing. I just have to make sure my priorities aren’t out of whack and that I don’t end up putting writing above things like self care, my family, and time spent with Jesus.
What is the most fun part of being a creator? What is the worst part?
Hehe, my favorite part of being a creator is getting to, well, create! I’m a very right-side-brained person, so I enjoy being creative more than technical. (Maybe that’s why I enjoy fantasy more than sci-fi . . . ) As for the worst . . . I don’t think I have one! I adore my work, and there isn’t a single part of it I wish I could skip or leave out.
How do family members and friends react to your art?
My family and friend group are absolutely incredible and supportive. I have had a few people off-handedly mention that there was no way I could make a job out of writing without going to college or pursuing a degree in something, but I don’t identify those folks as my friends anymore.
What's the weirdest thing you've done for your art?
Ooh, I love this question! Hmm . . . I’d say probably throwing up. To be fair, it wasn’t my idea, but in the midst of it, I was mentally jotting down ways to describe it.
Do you have a creative routine or ritual? What does a "day in the life" look like for you?
Mmm, this is a good one! I actually have a blog post I can recommend for this one! Slice of Life | A Day in the Life of a Young Writer
