2024 “word of the year” reveal
Last year, I picked "truth" as my word of the year, the year before that it was "purpose." Both words were a reaction against what I had struggled with, a lack of truth and a feeling of aimlessness.
This year, my word of the year is also a reaction to a shortcoming I have noticed, and a resolve to overcome it. In the past, I have been accused of taking myself too seriously.
And I will admit to being guilty as charged.
However, there are a lot of things that I think others take too lightly. At my Christian college I have observed a lot of really shallow thinking. And I have picked my word of the year accordingly.

I know, I know, it's a little odd. But it's a word that leaves lots of room for exploration, thinking, and finding meaning in life without taking too much on. You see, our culture has a lot of focus on "big." We want to see the biggest, the most, the flashiest things. We don't want to take the time to go deep. We overlook the value of humble things and falsely assume that they aren't significant.
I don't want to be a shallow person who only focuses on appearances and surface issues. I want to take the time and effort to go deeper and mine the value hidden in the small and humble things God has put in my life.
A few notes... this idea, (like my birthday list XD,) was originally borrowed from Roseanna M. White.
If you are curious about how "Truth" went last year, be sure to subscribe to the Flight Patterns newsletter. In the December recap there will be a video about the themes of 2023 including Truth.
I would love to hear if you have a word of the year!
